Week 4: Start ‘Em/Sit ‘Em

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 03:06 PM PDT

Fantasy football is a cruel sport. I find it to be very exciting, but it usually ends with me screaming at the television set because my player didn't get the ball four plays in a row inside the opponent's five yard line. It's funny because most of us think that our player should be the [...]

Red Sox Face Indians With Chance to Rest

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 12:39 PM PDT

The Red Sox finally backed into the playoffs despite limping down the stretch. The Angels must really want the first round series with the Red Sox as their beating the Rangers put the Red Sox in, simultaneously setting up the matchup. The Sox are 3-2 against the Indians this season and split their earlier two-game set [...]

Coach’s blog – hot dogs and onions

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 12:29 PM PDT

Gym date 10.01.09 (Hot Dogs and Onions) - Our mission is to understand the hot dog and onion phenomenon. Nothing is worse than training with someone who stinks. I hate it when you shake someone’s hand to start rolling with them and you get a strong whiff of boiled hot dogs and onions. Come on guys, [...]

Bronson Arroyo Assures Us That He Didn’t Rub Those Balls With Pine Tar

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 12:29 PM PDT

We have controversy! And who doesn't love controversy? After last night's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds, John Smoltz complained that he couldn't get a good grip on any of the balls. His grip was so bad, he walked five batters in the second and third innings alone.

His counterpart, Reds' pitcher Bronson Arroyo, had no issues with  his grip on the balls. A feat that John Smoltz gave Arroyo credit for after the game. Cardinals' pitching coach Dave Duncan on the other hand, only gave Arroyo credit for his slick use of pine tar.

Duncan, who said the umpires told him the baseballs indeed were rubbed up, said Arroyo was able to deal with the issue because "I'm sure he had pine tar on his cap. He didn't have any problem getting a grip. Balls like that can generate a lot more movement than a slick ball that hasn't been rubbed up."

Asked if he had seen Arroyo go to his cap, Duncan said, "Just every pitch."
Well, Bronson. How are you gonna explain that?
"The reason he's saying that is because I've been using this hat all season," Arroyo said. "That's what happens from playing games in every other park, where there is so much mud on the balls. That black stuff comes off on my fingers every day." Arroyo produced the game cap from his locker and the bill was stained black.

"The funny thing is I normally switch out hats. I have two hats," Arroyo said. "The other one is a lot cleaner. It's starting to build up a little bit. I didn't switch hats because it wasn't hot enough to be really soaked and wet like in the summertime."
Of course. The old "I've been using this cap all season" excuse. Dave Duncan aint buying it.

Since we're already here, we'll let Dusty Baker add his two cents.
"If anybody should know, it would be Duncan," Baker responded. "I remember they had Julian Tavarez over there. They threw his hat out, remember that? His hat was all messed up. They also had a left-hander, Steve Kline. It's not like it's something new."
As usual, thanks for nothing, Dusty.

Anticipation is high. Expectations are even higher. And now, the wait is over. The Zambonis are gassed up and we're ready to get the 2009-2010 NHL season off and running…or in this case, skating. Tonight marks the season opener, as the top two seeds from last season's Eastern Conference playoffs meet [...]

Media Days Mark the Start of Another NBA Season

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 11:51 AM PDT

Well, this whole week the media can actually annoy the NBA stars all they want. They can take as many pics of them as they want (even if they have a Manny Ramirez wig, or power outages in Cleveland). Yes, if you haven’t guessed it, this whole week NBA teams are hosting their Media Days. Even though [...]

Blue Jays Blow Out Sox AAA Club 12-0

Posted: 01 Oct 2009 11:41 AM PDT

In a game barely worth recapping, the Blue Jays ripped through the Red Sox, winning 12-0 behind ace Roy Halladay. Perhaps making a last pitch (get it?) for the Cy Young Award, Halladay tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout. While incredible, the start wasn’t very impressive, considering the Red Sox threw out a lineup that included [...]
