Fantasy TV Series To Look Out For

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:15 PM PDT

I have always been a fan of fantasy novels. Some say that these stories are for children, but as the great C.S. Lewis said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” Today, "children's stories" and fantasy novels have reached such a state that they are being made into movies and TV series. In the past months, I have been watching almost nothing but these shows.

It saddens me that there seems to be a dearth of fantasy TV series. We had the Legend of the Seeker, which isn't really a favorite of mine; but it was still something! You've probably heard of the cancellation of the series by now – a real disappointment to Terry Goodkind fans out there.

Still, there are a couple of series to look out for. I have just finished watching the second season of Merlin, and yes, I have been Merlinized. Never mind that the plot is quite different on many points from the popular version of the legend. The TV show itself is something to behold. The third season should start sometime soon.

Here's the clincher: The Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin are being made into TV shows as well! The news is that the first book, The Game of Thrones, is already being filmed for HBO. While initial reports say that the pilot would be aired in March of this year, more recent updates tell us that it will not be till 2011. No matter, at least there is something to look forward to.

Any other fantasy TV shows you can recommend?

LEGO Minifigures are the awesomeness

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 07:11 PM PDT

LEGO Bricks are the world’s greatest toys, but on their own, they have no personality. For that, one must look to the universally-loved Minifigures. Those little yellow guys with bendable arms and legs that inhabit the LEGO worlds we all create. They come in all varieties and flavors — some even resemble your favorite Star Wars or Harry Potter heroes — and some fans are so obsessed with the little guys that they’re more interested in the Minifigs than the Bricks.

Minifigs are such a big deal, they occupy their own subset of LEGO fandom. There are websites, there are collectors, there are entire companies and fan groups devoted to tricking the little guys out with uber-customizations. You’ll find hundreds of videos on YouTube devoted to stop-motion animations of Minifigs doing everything from mundane tasks to reenacting your favorite movies and TV shows.

LEGO has at long last seized upon the uncommon popularity of its Minifigures by launching an entire line of products that feature nothing but collectible Minifigs. Each Minifigure comes with its own special accessories, display plate, and collector’s leaflet. There’s a website all about this new product line at minifigures.lego.com, where you can take a look at the entire roster of the first 16 Minifigs to be made available, as well as play Minifig online games, and download wallpapers, posters, stickers, and more. Plus, LEGO has created detailed bios for each of the 16 Minifigs, which I suppose is an effort to make them as individualized as possible, like other collectible figurines.

But collectors, be warned: there’s a catch. In the time-honored tradition of trading card collecting, LEGO has decided to package these solo Minifigs in a standardized “mystery bag” that’s not transparent, so that you never know which Minifigure you’re getting when you buy it. It’s a total crapshoot, and obviously it’s meant to encourage trading among friends in order to complete the set. But since they only cost about $2 a pop, it’s not like they’ll break your bank. (You’ll be able to find them in a few days at most toy stores in the U.S. and the U.K.)

That minor caveat aside, these collectible Minifigures look very detailed, showing that a lot of care and attention was put into their design. I’m onboard with all of them except the Circus Clown. Because as we all know, clowns are nightmares come to life.

The JEJEMON Phenomenon: do U~ speak lyK~ ThIs, n0H?

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:00 PM PDT

My country, the Philippines is experiencing the JEJEMON Phenomenon.

Jejemon (n): Usually seen around social networking sites such as Friendster and Multiply, jejemons are individuals Hu LyK 2 TyP LyK diZS jejejeje;

Jejemonn (n): Anyone with a low tolerance in correct punctuation, syntax and grammar. Jejemons are usually hated or hunted down by Jejebusters or the grammar nazi to eradicate their grammatical ways.

Jejemon (n): an offshoot of the subculture popularity of Pokemon and while the latter means "pocket monsters"; Jejemons are often seen as "Jejeje monsters" for their ability to turn off and annoy people with their "foreign" style of writing.

So are you a Jejemon or a Jejebuster? Hahaha!

Unfortunately, not everyone finds this issue amusing. Some may find it a bit elitist and rude.

But come on, you HAVE to admit, reading that kind of text on the internet is just really annoying! I can understand losing a few vowels when you’re sending an SMS on your phones since you only have around 140-160 characters per message. But with phones nowadays having QWERTY keypads, and phones being able to automatically separate messages longer than 160 characters in 2-3 messages, people really don’t have any excuse but to use proper English.

And besides, this is the internet for goodness sake, and there is no character limit on the internet!

ThIs StYlE oF WrItiNg WaS cUtE aGeS aGo, like circa 1995. But not anymore! It’s the year 2010, honey, and right now, proper English is geek chic. Now if you need to communicate with a JEJEMON, fortunately for JEJEbusters, there’s a JEJEMON Translator!

Princess Leia Wannabes Wash Your Car in Star Wars Charity Bash

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 12:21 PM PDT

Geeks and basement dwellers nerds united, yes you heard that right! Princess Leia washing your car. Or in other words:

G4 Organizes Star Wars Charity car-wash and all you get are pics of Princess Leia Wannabes!

That’s for all those of yours who have never seen this picture of Princess Leia and double sunbathing on set or those youngsters among you who think that Carrie Fisher is too old.

The whole concept of a charitable car wash operation was of course brilliant and commendable and even better because it involved Star Wars. Of course we would all want to have our car washed by Princess Leia. Girls, Star Wars fans and in bikini… washing your car!

The Force was with G4 this past weekend as we joined with the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, the 501st Legion and Playmate Sara Jean Underwood to host the Star Wars Charity Car Wash in Hollywood. Money was raised for a good cause and people had their cars and space cruisers washed by an army of soapy wet slave Leias, Stormtroopers and one Playboy Bunny (who we’re pretty sure has ties to the Rebel Alliance). [via]

So without any further ado, here are your wet geek dreams come true. In colour. Online. With Princess Leia.

More pics after the jump.

Sorry guys, that’s all you get. That and the sexiest geek girls alive. And if that ain’t enough, it don’t exist you can go and drool at more pics at G4’s complete gallery I gracefully borrowed the pictures above from.

Don’t forget to clean up after you leave, guys!

Get Your LEGO Bricks, USB and Your Laptop Now. Why? To Solve That 5×5 Rubik’s Cube!

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:55 AM PDT

The life of a geek sometimes is really simple, isn’t it? Take some popular geek meta: laptops, USB, LEGO and Rubik’s. Now throw them all together and make one thing out of this.

Rubik’s you said? Which one? 2×2? 3×3? I guess most of you still struggle with that 3×3, right?

Let’s speak business then today: what about a 4×4 Cube or a 5×5 even? Sweating? Woser!

Trust me, they really aren’t that hard to solve. All you need are some LEGO skills. And some programming skills. Now I have to warn you: LEGO Technics. Of course that excludes all Mac Nerds who preferred to go with the Fisher-Price of computers. Next you’ll have to build a robot with your LEGO bricks.

Something like the Stair Climber. But not a stair claimber. A LEGO Technics robot to solve your cube.

Last but not least you will need some hax0r skillz. And know C++. For Windows, yes.

That’s all. Except for the missing USB cable. From now on you’ll solve any Cube up to 5×5. Told you it wasn’t that hard!

What? Don’t believe me? Check it out yourself then.

MultiCuber achieves another world’s first. This LEGO robot demonstrates a timed relay solve of 2×2x2, 3×3x3, 4×4x4 and 5×5x5 Rubik’s cubes. This hopefully explains why the robot was given it’s name!

This version of MultiCuber can solve cubes between about 5cm and 6cm. A second version has also been created that can solve physically larger cubes including the 6×6x6 V-CUBE 6.

The robot itself is built entirely out of LEGO including a Mindstorms NXT kit and Vision Command webcam. Both the solver application running on the laptop and the embedded software running on the NXT were written in C++. The laptop communicates with the NXT via USB.

And so was born today’s Nerd of the Week. Yes, I know that’s two in one week, can’t help it when they are that smart and awesome, can you?.

WoWeekly: Cataclysm Raid Progression Changes

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:37 AM PDT

News about the changes in the raiding system came out last Monday and a lot of my guild mates started shouting, “The sky is falling!” causing a bit of uncertainty in our guild come Cataclysm.

In a nutshell, Blizzard is planning to implement the following changes to the raid system when the expansion comes along:

  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids will share the same lockout.
  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids difficulty will be as close as possible to each other.
  • 10-Man and 25-Man raids will drop the exact same loot, but 25-man will drop a higher quantity of items.
  • Normal versus Heroic mode will be chosen on a per-boss basis in Cataclysm raids, the same way it works in Icecrown Citadel
  • For the first few raid tiers, our plan is to provide multiple smaller raids. Instead of one raid with eleven bosses, you might have a five-boss raid as well as a six-boss raid.

My guild is a casual raiding guild (with around 20-30 regular raiders) so news of having a single lockout for both the 10 and 25 player modes came as a shock. Even though we have regular 25-man raids during weekends, we have 2 10-man raids that are very important to our raid progression, as well.

Our 10-man raids serve as venue for us to be familiar with the fights, and of course to get gear so we can be ready for the 25 man raids. The 10 man raids definitely make our lives easier since the only thing we have to worry about is the group synergy, since we already have the gear and the experience.

Basically, with the new changes, if you want to do both 10 and 25 man raid in a single week, you will need to do so on two different toons.

And for a casual raiding guild, that definitely poses a problem as not everyone has time to actually level up and gear 2 different toons so early in the expansion.

I’m sure though that the hardcore players and guilds out there are rejoicing, like, “FINALLY, we get to be L33T again!” I have to admit, the Wrath of the Lich King expansion was definitely casual-player friendly. Too casual-friendly, I think! So even though the new Cataclysm changes are appearing to be a bit hard on casual players, I personally think Blizzard is just balancing it all out for the hard-core players, too.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after 5 years of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard is definitely an expert when it comes to game balance.

Jon Stewart rants about iPhone 4G mess

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 07:15 AM PDT

As much as I don’t want to keep this ridiculous story going forever… this is way too good not to share. Jon Stewart puts a voice to what all of us are really thinking about this silly iPhone 4G leak investigation, and Apple’s gestapo-like security tactics.

So brilliant, it’s poetry.
