There’s literally nothing artists won’t use as a creative medium. Proof positive: Faith Pearson’s diorama models that use nothing but black & white and colour ink cartridges. The UK’s Ink and Media Blog assigned Pearson — an artist who specializes in “toy theater making” — to create something out of a bunch of ink cartridges, similar to these genuine canon ink cartridges, that were going to be thrown away. (No recycling? Say it ain’t so! No, seriously — Al Gore will have them killed.) She blew their minds when she came back with these incredible images and scenes depicting iconic science fiction and fantasy movies. Pearson used no Photoshopping or other image editing; she merely assembled the cartridges in interesting ways and lit them dramatically. Click through for all five dioramas Pearson created.

Of course, having the show back on also means that we have to wait for the next episodes to be aired (and some of them shot) – bad news for people with low EQ like me. Still, the good news is that there are tons of other stuff that we can get our hands on while waiting for next week. Here’s one for the forensic geek, or maybe, special effects geek is more appropriate in this case. This video is entitled “Dexter: The blood, the bodies, and the killing tools.” Can you get any better than that? Of course, the video shows us just how unreal the stuff we see on TV is. At the same time, you cannot help but appreciate the work that goes into making what we see on TV seem as real as real can be! I have opted not to see the recent season premier and wait for the next ones to be aired first, but this video and others like it can whet my appetite for now. Photo credit: comicmix |

Universal Designs Limited has just released this replica of the utility belt worn by Christian Bale’s Batman, and it can be yours for a measly $150. As you can see, it’s even functional, containing pouches for your phone and keys. Crafted entirely from cow hide leather that’s been given a “polished bronze” finish, the Batman “TDK Utility Pouch” is fitted with chrome studs and is even adjustable in size. It looks like it’s intended to be worn overtop Universal Designs’ Batman Leather Motorcycle Suit. Only 750 are being made. But come on, other than cosplay or some kind of superhero fetish that frankly I don’t want to think about, I can’t imagine who the customers for this are. It could be a nifty collector’s item, but can you seriously imagine seeing someone wear this in public? |

Gives a whole new meaning to “level grinding,” eh?
There are four areas where you can have “fun” with your “PlayDate,” which is what GameCrush calls its paid female players: casual gamers are in The Arcade, hardcore gamers are in The Arena, gamers who want some tutoring from their PlayDate can go to The Academy, and The Edge (no relation to U2) is GameCrush’s very own “red-light district.” Umm… yeah. Don’t feel too bad for the PlayDate girls; they’re all excellent gamers, and they’re getting paid $20 (or more) an hour to crush geeky, horny males. There’s even a point system which players can use to “tip” their PlayDate. Doing my best to avoid getting on my soapbox here… Although I desperately want to go on a diatribe about how this pandering to the lowest-common-denominator of the gaming world is why it’s never taken seriously as an artform by the world at large… But I’m not going to do it. No sirree, I am not. |
| ‘I Am Number Four’ Trailer Gives Us A Sneak Peak Posted: 29 Sep 2010 11:43 AM PDT D.J. Caruso’s teen alien movie, I Am Number Four finally has a teaser trailer! The movie features samurai swords, sexy humanoid aliens and finger blasters, pretty much everything we need to enjoy a movie. The film is based off the novel by James Frey and Jobie Hughes and stars Timothy Olyphant, Alex Pettyfer, Teresa Palmer, Kevin Durand and Dianna Agron. Here’s the Official Synopsis:
Here’s the trailer: I Am Number Four premieres in theaters February 18, 2011. |

Now I have been lucky enough to find the first two issues of The 99, which I found thoroughly enjoyable, but since then later issues have seemed as available as rocking horse poop. Reading the press coverage I was amazed to find out that by now nearly thirty of the 99 heroes have been revealed (which eventually will surely rival even the fabled Legion Of Super-Heroes, or even the X-Men for a cast), of which I maybe know of the first seven or eight. Partnering these up with the JLA is a masterful move, as I for one want to see a lot more of these characters. However all the coverage so far just refers to an un-named DC villain teaming with Rughal (the link is just one example), but erm, look at the picture. Starro anybody? (I suppose since this is supposed to happen on the fabled Earth-Crossover, Starro’s recent defeat in the pages of REBELS is irrelevent.) All such considerations aside, this is great. Now, next I want to see DC (or Marvel) do the same with Raj Comics. (For that matter, I would love to see some of Raj Comics translated into english.) So that alongside the heroes of the Middle East we can see the heroes of the Indian subcontinent. What I have read of them, the characters are fascinating, however I unfortunately do not read Hindi. I truly miss some of the Virgin Comics titles, such as Devi. Please don’t tell me she’s gone for good. I know the new incarnation of Liquid Comics has a few Hollywood projects lined up, but when was the last time we heard any news about them? Raj Comics promises to fill that gap. Someone, please, translate them already! The British stable of characters seem to have all defected to the US, as seen by Marvel’s current Miracleman reprints. (Although is Miracleman British or American? With his complex history as Captain Marvel and Marvelman, who can tell?) Yet the rest of the world may be full of characters we don’t know about, and I want to seee them all. Britain’s publishing may have dried up, but there is no shortage of British creators working for the larger companies, and taking the rich British stable of characters with them. Yet the world has rich cultures to draw more stories from, Africa, South America, and I cannot wait to see what riches these comic worlds have for us. Hmmm. How very imperialist of me. |

Big news for 3D movies: All six Star Wars films are coming to theaters with full 3D conversions. Only unlike recent films that were filmed in 2D and converted to 3D with less-than-spectacular results (*cough*ClashoftheTitans), this being Star Wars, Lucasfilm is not rushing the conversion process, using painstaking attention to detail to give it the best conversion possible. “Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right,” says John Knoll of ILM. “It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.” Sounds good, right? I mean, I love filling George Lucas‘ ultra-deep pockets to see yet another version of the movies we love so much, with ever-higher ticket prices, as much as the next guy. But sadly, I must temper that enthusiasm with this: Lucas has decided to convert and release the 3D versions to theaters in chronological order. Meaning the first one to return to theaters in 3D will be The Phantom Suck, which will arrive sometime in 2012. If that movie is well received at the box office, Lucasfilm will then proceed to release each film sequentially, one year at a time. (I.E., Attack of the Clones would arrive in 2013, and so on, up to Return of the Jedi in 2017). Lucas will then release the six films in 3D on home video, by which time 3D televisions should be more prevalent. So. Will you pay a higher ticket price to go see the Star Wars films again, in 3D? |
| Nintendo 3DS Coming Q1 2011, Will Cost the Same as 250GB Xbox Posted: 29 Sep 2010 08:10 AM PDT
The big news: the 3DS is releasing in Japan (which always gets Nintendo’s stuff first) on February 26, 2011, and then sometime in March 2011 in North America and Europe. The price? It’ll be 25,000 Yen in Japan, which translates to about $300 in the U.S. Yes, that’s right: the price of portable gaming devices is catching up to their television console brothers (though the U.S. price has not yet been officially announced). Will the cost of 3D gaming will be the same as an Xbox 360 console with a 250GB hard drive? It sure looks like it. New 3DS capabilities that were announced, videos of games being made for the new hardware, and more are right after the jump…
Something else you can do with the built-in 3D camera system is Augmented Reality (AR) games. Ever on-the-nose with their software titles, Nintendo is working on a proprietary game that shows off this technology, called AR Games. One announcement that the Nintendo faithful will especially love: the 3DS has a virtual console built in that will let you play old Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, which will be downloadable through an online store. A new wireless LAN service is being launched exclusively for the 3DS, called “Wifine.” Perhaps one of the most interesting announcements out of Tokyo is that Nintendo is planning to offer some streaming 3D television content through the device, as a test trial. Should it work well and become popular, you can probably expect to see it rolled out in other parts of the world. No word on how much this feature will cost in Japan. Two colors for the portable console will be available in Japan at launch: “Aqua Blue” and “Cosmos Black.” (Is Crayola is the official sponsor of the color names?) It comes with a fancy new telescoping stylus. Here are some new vids of the 3DS, including game footage, to whet your appetite… So what do you think? Is the 3DS the new hotness? More to the point: is it worth $300? |
