MRI shows Ramirez has shoulder instability

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:56 PM PDT

Results from an MRI taken Wednesday on Hanley Ramirez's left shoulder were released today, and the news isn't surprising, but definitely not on the good side. Ramirez has shoulder instability, basically meaning he will likely experience more dislocations and pain.   Ramirez will talk with Dr. Lee Kaplan (Medical Director of the Florida Marlins) to see if he will need surgery on the shoulder or not. Ramirez had surgery on the same shoulder in 2007, and it hasn't bothered him since this season; as he landed on it while attempting to make a diving catch in early August. Joe Frisaro reports that if surgery is required, Hanley likely won't be back for the remaining 2011 season, but will still be ready for 2012. He also says that it's not as serious as the '07 injury.   Ramirez was placed on the disabled list on August 10th (retroactive August 3rd), and has since been in games with the Jupiter Hammerheads (A) for rehab. Hanley felt the shoulder pop out of place on Tuesday during a game with Jupiter, just hours after speculation from reports said that the team would bring him back up to play on Wednesday in the series against the Mets.     -Derek (Source: The Fish Pond [Joe Frisaro])

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:19 PM PDT

Brad Hand will make the start on Friday for the Marlins, as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL.   He will face Roy Oswalt (6-8, 3.77 ERA) in the series opener. Hand is 1-4 with a 4.08 ERA; having 8 starts this year. In his previous start (August 8th), Hand gave up 7 earned runs on 9 hits in 5.0 innings against the Atlanta Braves.   Ricky Nolasco gets the start Saturday, and Anibal Sanchez finishes it up in the series finale.   -Derek
