Illustrations for Nerds in Love

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 04:00 AM PST

Who says nerds cannot fall in love? Why not? Nerds are human, after all. This is probably what artist Nicole Martinez had in mind when she designed some illustrations to cater to nerds in love.

The artist is based in Boston, MA, and she has taken elements from different branches of science to come up with her posters for nerds in love. WARNING: Sloppiness left and right, up and down!

Now that you have been warned, let’s take a look at some of the illustrations.

Particles

You do not need to know much about the atom to get the idea behind this illustration. Now if your partner (imaginary or otherwise) has a sense of humor, though, I think the he or she will at least give you a chuckle.

Melt My Inner Core

The Earth Sciences have always been a source of fascination for me. There is so much in nature that can take your breath away, even if you do not understand a single thing. Especially if you do not understand a thing. This illustration for nerds in love – with someone else or the Earth – is something I find delightful. Sloppy, yes, but funny nonetheless.

Sweet as Pi

There is no doubt about the illustration that takes home the cake for me. This Sweet as Pi illustration touches on everything that’s fun – food, sweets, and Pi!

If you can take more sappiness, there is more of these illustrations for nerds in love where they came from. Check out the Daily Inspiration.

Snowball Launching Crossbow

Winter’s here, which means snowball fights are coming your way. But if you’re ready to fling snowballs like a boss, then it’s time to separate the men from the boys with the Snowball Launching Crossbow.

Kids throw snowballs with their twig-like arms. Adults use their superior intellects to make technology that does the work for them. The technology in this case is the stretchy-banded crossbow you see above. And this bad boy will straight-up flatten that whiny kid across the street.

ThinkGeek is selling the Snowball Launching Crossbow for $29.99 plus shipping, and if anyone who’s ever been in a snowball ambush knows that you can’t put a price tag on revenge. At the time of this writing, the crossbow is out of stock at ThinkGeek, but they expect to have more before Christmas.

If you want to really mix things up, you might also want to try the TracBall Snowball Launcher, a jai alai style device that not only makes it easy to send those snowballs flying far, but comes with a handy little compress attachment to form the perfect snowball shape for you. The Launcher sells for just $9.99.

This is How You Do a Video Game Movie

Half-Life: Origins will be the best two minutes of your day. Maybe your whole week. It makes Hollywood’s big-budget movie adaptations of video games look like pretentious nonsense. (That’s right, Prince of Persia, I’m looking at you…)

Technically, Half-Life: Origins is a short film, but it plays like the trailer to a movie adaptation of Valve’s seminal video game. Gamers remember their journey with Gordon Freeman into the bowels of the Black Mesa facility at the start of Half-Life with great fondness. It’s not an overstatement to say that that scene has become one of the most defining moments in gaming history.

This short film recreates that scene with modern sensibilities; it perfectly captures the spirit of Gordon’s trip to work, while bringing it into the 21st Century. What impresses me the most is that it manages to rekindle the awe — the indefinable cool factor — that I felt the first time I fired up Half-Life and interacted with that opening scene. The creator should seriously put this on Kickstarter and raise the money to make a full-length movie. I bet it’d be funded in no time.

Hollywood, you’re about to get schooled. Watch carefully and take notes.
